Who is Jesus Christ and what does His Name mean?

The name “Jesus” was translated from the Hebrew name “Yeshua”.

“Yeshua” is the short form of “Yehoshua”, which is how He would’ve been called when He walked on earth.

“Yehoshua” means "Yahweh is salvation.”

"Yah" - short for Yahweh, "Yasha" - a verb meaning "to save" or "to deliver."

He is the Deliverer.

“Yahweh”, later translated by Medieval Latin / Germans as “Jehovah”, means “I AM WHO I AM” — the answer God gave humans when humans first asked God in trembling fear, “…what’s your name?” because they knew He was the true God when they eye-witnessed signs of His works on earth. No other “gods” in the history of mankind had a name like this. All other “gods” had names. Naming is a human construct. The true God is beyond names.

Christ means “The Chosen One.”

Jesus is God in human form—God the Son—who walked among us.

God did this Himself by being born by His creation, as His creation, a human who is fully human yet fully God, Jesus.

God loved His creation, you and I, so much that He came to fix things Himself and make things right again. He is humble, loving, patient.

He explained to us that Jesus is His Son since He is three-in-one: Father, Son, Spirit and was always a three-in-one being who is relational by His Nature.

God, had to be fully human, as the Son of Man, Jesus, so that fair salvation can be given to His creation through His own sacrifice and death.

He came to reconcile the perfect and imperfect.

Not through force. Not through religion.

But through sacrifice.

Through love.

Jesus Christ died in the worst possible way, rejected by His own people. People He loved. Crucified not just for maximum pain and suffering, but to shame Him.

Mocked. Beaten. Stripped naked.

He was blameless, sinless, innocent.

But he was hung on a cross like a criminal.

By the very people He came to save.

Our kind did this.

Imagine if people did this to your son.
What would you do?

Think about that.
Feel it in your bones.

Feel the rage.

Feel the sorrow.

Feel the deep pain within your entire being.

Feel the urge to destroy, obliterate, disintegrate.

Can you forgive?

I couldn’t.

God did.

-

Jesus Christ, the Chosen One, was the only human who was sinless.

He limited His power while on earth so that He could do two things:

1) Die for us and have that death be 100% enough for salvation for those who believe.

This is because He died as a perfect human to bridge perfection and imperfection by fairly paying for our sins, the root of our imperfection.

2) Be a testimony of how a human can live in perfect relationship with God. We will never achieve this, but it’s the North Star we are called to chase like an asymptote towards perfection.

Sinner's Prayer Variation by St. Paul Street Evangelization

God our Father, I believe that out of Your infinite love You have created me. In a thousand ways I have shunned Your love. I repent of each and every one of my sins. Please forgive me. Thank You for sending Your Son to die for me, to save me from eternal death. I choose this day to enter into (renew my) covenant with You and to place Jesus at the center of my heart. I surrender to Him as Lord over my whole life. I ask You now to flood my soul with the gift of the Holy Spirit so that my life may be transformed. Give me the grace and courage to live as a disciple in Your Church for the rest of my days. In Jesus name I pray Amen.

Sinner's Prayer Variation by Billy Graham

Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner, and I ask for Your forgiveness. I believe You died for my sins and rose from the dead. I turn from my sins and invite You to come into my heart and life. I want to trust and follow You as my Lord and Savior. In Your Name. Amen.

Sinner's Prayer Variation by Cru (formerly Campus Crusade for Christ)

Lord Jesus, I need You. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins. I open the door of my life and receive You as my Savior and Lord. Thank You for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. Take control of the throne of my life. Make me the kind of person You want me to be.

Sinner's Prayer Variation by Greg Laurie Salvation Prayer

Dear Lord Jesus, I know I am a sinner. I believe You died for my sins. Right now, I turn from my sins and open the door of my heart and life. I confess You as my personal Lord and Savior. Thank You for saving me. Amen.
